End-to-End Product & UX Design for a Financial Literacy App

FinLit is a self-initiated concept for a modern financial literacy app designed to help users gain control over their money with confidence. I created this project from the ground up — starting with the idea, researching user needs, sketching and wireframing, and building out the full interface in Figma.

Throughout the process, I conducted user interviews and testing to better understand financial pain points and behaviors. I translated those insights into clear, user-centered design solutions that prioritize simplicity, accessibility, and engagement. The final prototype includes an onboarding flow, dashboard, and learning tools that reflect real-world financial challenges and promote consistent learning habits.

The Problem

Understanding the Problem Before Designing a Solution:

FinLit began as a response to a simple question: Why do so many people avoid their finances? To find out, I interviewed students, young professionals, and first-time earners. Their answers were consistent:

“It’s overwhelming.”
“I don’t even know where to start.”
“It’s too complicated — I just give up.”

I ran surveys to gather broader insights and learned that users weren’t lacking tools — they were lacking clarity, confidence, and guidance.

Ideation

Designing for Trust, Simplicity, and Momentum

With insights in hand, I started brainstorming features that could lower the barrier to entry. I sketched out flows focused on:

• A friendly, non-intimidating onboarding experience
• Bite-sized daily learning goals
• A visual dashboard with progress tracking
• Real-world simulations for budgeting and saving

My goal was to make finance feel more like a personal guide — not a lecture.

Prototyping

From Paper to Pixels

I built out mid- and high-fidelity prototypes in Figma, focusing on clear layout, mobile-first design, and intentional UI decisions.
Typography was chosen for approachability, colors for calmness and confidence. Button placement and screen flow were optimized to reduce friction and create a sense of momentum.

The result: an intuitive onboarding, engaging learning modules, and a visual dashboard that encourages consistent progress.

Testing

User Testing with Real People

I tested the interactive prototype with 6 users and observed their behavior in completing tasks like:

Signing up
Starting their first lesson
Checking their progress

Feedback led to clear changes:
Simplified onboarding instructions
Added progress indicators
Reworded financial terms to be more user-friendly

Outcome

A Financial Tool That Feels Like a Coach, Not a Calculator

FinLit is more than a concept — it’s a story of how good design can meet users where they are. Every interaction was crafted to reduce intimidation, inspire consistency, and build financial confidence — one small step at a time.

Reflection

What I Learned

This project taught me how to lead a design process from zero to high-fidelity prototype. I grew in my research skills, storytelling ability, and comfort with design tools like Figma. But most importantly, I saw the power of empathy — how real user voices can shape design decisions that truly help people.
